- <p> DIED. Barry Sadler, 49, former staff sergeant with the U.S.
- Army Special Forces in Viet Nam and author with Robin Cook of
- The Ballad of the Green Berets; in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Sadler
- had suffered paralysis and brain damage after he was shot by an
- unknown assailant in 1988 in Guatemala, where he had been
- training Nicaraguan rebels. The song Sadler claimed he "co-wrote
- with a bottle of tequila" was No. 1 in the country for five
- weeks in 1966 and sold more than 7 million singles and albums.
